White Rose Maths Scheme...

At Crestwood Park, we regulary use the White Rose Maths scheme to plan and organise our maths lessons. The team has kindly prepared a series of free online lessons to cover the learning objectives that I would normally be teaching Year 5 at this time of year. There are five maths lessons (one for each day) for each week on their website. Every lesson comes with a short video showing you clearly and simply how to help your child to complete the activity successfully. There are also some questions and activities with accompanying answers!

Follow the link below to access the series of lessons for Year 5.

This week (w/c 13th July) is all about measurement! Good luck!

Writing...

Talk for Writing...

The Talk for Writing approach enables children to imitate orally the language they need for a particular topic, before reading and analysing it, and then writing their own version. This approach encourages children to read and write independently, which is why this particular document we have found is perfect for you to work through at home during this unprecedented time.

Follow the link below to explore the document that will guide you through a variety of different activities to support you in eventually writing your own story. This is a lengthy document that is designed to be completed in sections over a period of time. Do not attempt to complete all of these activities in one session. Take time to get to know the story and familiarise yourself with the language. You must work hard to complete each activity to the best of your ability to ensure that your final piece of writing is to the highest possible standard! Good luck and enjoy!

If you require a printed copy of the document, please get in touch with school and we can sort this for you.

Below is another fantastic writing document that Talk for Writing have produced. Again, please work through this in your own time. It should take quite a period of time to be completed properly. You will notice that on the first page, the document asks for a donation to Great Ormond Street hospital. Please note that our school has made a donation to Great Ormond Street hospital to host these packs on our website. There is no requirement for parents to make a donation themselves.

Here is your third Talk for Writing work booklet! Another fantastic writing project all about wizards! Again, please take as much time as you need. Our school have made another donation to the NSPCC to host these packs on our website. There is no requirement for you to make a personal donation.

Other Writing Resources...

Follow the link below to access a range of independent writing activities. There are a variety of genres to choose from and each text type includes a stimulus and a planning template. How far will your imagination take you?...

Summer term 1

Don't forget to include Year 5 language and structural features in your writing to improve its quality and effectiveness! Below, I have attached our prompt lists from school to remind you!

The Alchemist's Letter...

This video from The Literacy Shed is a fantastic resource to encourage and inspire creative writing. I have chosen The Alchemist's Letter because I know that you enjoy an element of mystery and suspense in stories. Read the blurb below to get an idea of what this story is about.

"My father told me the story of an alchemist, who built a device so powerful it could turn any metal into pure gold. But, to power his device, he fed it his own memories. He had a family but in his quest for gold, he abandoned them. After the alchemist's death, his son returned to the home he once knew as a child."

After watching the video, have a look at the attached writing document. Here, you will find a word bank to support you and 3 diferent examples of pieces of writing (narrative, descriptive and letter writing). Read through the models to get inspiration and then challenge yourself to write your own versions.

Summer term 2

As this is our last week of term, we are going to do two 'Free Writes'! Today I would like you to watch a short film called 'A Cloudy Lesson'. It is the story of a cloud maker and his apprentice grandson who are busy making clouds, when everything doesn’t go to plan! Once you have watched the clip, your task is to produce a diary entry from the perspective of the boy in the video.

However, you can also complete these activities with any of the spellings from the list! Why don't you challenge yourself and see how far down the list you can get? Remember, practise makes perfect!

You can also play some of these online spelling games...

Family Life...

In 1833 the Government passed a Factory Act to improve conditions for children working in factories. Young children were working very long hours in workplaces where conditions were often terrible. The basic act was as follows:

  • no child workers under nine years of age
  • employers must have an age certificate for their child workers
  • children of 9-13 years to work no more than nine hours a day
  • children of 13-18 years to work no more than 12 hours a day
  • children are not to work at night
  • two hours schooling each day for children
  • four factory inspectors appointed to enforce the law

However, the passing of this act did not mean that the mistreatment of children stopped overnight. Using these sources, investigate how far the act had solved the problems of child labour.

Source 1

1. This is an extract from a Factory Inspectors Report (1836).

  • Who gave the evidence to the factory inspector?
  • Work out how many hours (not including breaks), the boys are reported to have worked without stopping
  • Which parts of the new Factory Act have been broken?
  • What does the tone of the letter tell us about what the factory inspectors thought about the firm Taylor, Ibbotson & Co?
  • Having studied this source, would you be right to conclude that the 1833 Factory Act did nothing to solve the problems of child workers? Explain your answer

Source 2

2. This is a piece of a document detailing which companies broke the law.

  • What is the most common offence recorded?
  • Work out how much is fined for the different offences
  • By looking at the fines, which offence is regarded as the most serious?
  • How effective was the 1833 Factory Act? Explain your answer. (Hint: is the number of convictions a good or bad sign?)

Source 3

3. This is a photograph of workers in a factory in 1903.

  • What kind of factory is the boy working in?
  • How old do you think he is?
  • Write a list of all the dangers you can see in the factory and what you think could be done to improve them
  • This photograph is from 1903, 70 years after the first Factory Act. Explain whether you think work in the factory had improved for child workers by this time
  • Is the illustration at the top of this page and this photograph reliable evidence of working conditions in a factory? Give reasons for your answer

Challenge...

Imagine you are one of the four factory inspectors in 1836 trying to enforce the Factory Act. You have seen the evidence of abuse of the law and you are unhappy with the present system. Write a letter to the Home Secretary suggesting ways to improve the law and better methods of enforcing it.

Weekly Challenges...

Please email your completed challenges to me at: lguest1@crestwood-p.dudley.sch.uk

W/C - 18/5/20

Monday Challenge...

Some Monday maths for you today!

How many different ways can you make 100 whilst following the instructions on the document below?...

Marvellous maths work from Georgia and Drew below! Well done!

Georgia's work

Drew's work

I found:         1   2          1   4         2   1   And       2   3
                       4  7,          2  7,         3  8                  1    8

I realised I could swap the bottom left and the top right around and still get 100 as they both are 1 unit and 1 ten, when I got close to 100 as an even number e.g. 96, I would see how many numbers I am away from 100, divide it by 2 and then add or subtract it from my bottom 2 numbers to get 100.

Thursday Challenge...

Get Moving!

Let's do some PE! Your challenge today is to get yourself and other members of your household... moving!

Your task is to design and create an assault course or an obstacle course somewhere in your house or garden. You must consider...

- Where do you have the most space to do this?

- What part of the body do you want your course to work on?

- What level of challenge are you going to make your course?

Please email me with pictures and/or videos of your PE creations! I would LOVE to see your completed courses or even a video of someone completing it!

Good luck and enjoy - I cannot wait to see these!

Thank you to Shianna who sent me a fantastic video of her and her brother completing her brilliant obstacle course!
