Be the best you can be

Our Geography Curriculum Vision

At Crestwood Park we want to equip our children with the skills and knowledge needed to explore and understand our local area and the world. 'Seeing' geography first hand is really important to us and we take every opportunity to take the subject and learning beyond the classroom. Getting 'out and about' means or children can experience for themselves the geographical make-up of their immediate surroundings and the wider Black Country. This is tremendously important to us and a clear, repeating focus on our local area means our children leave us knowing a great deal about 'their world' and where it fits in and alongside other communities.

We aim to inspire in pupils a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Geography plays an important part in this as it can inspire children to think about their own place in the world, their values, and their rights and responsibilities to other people and the environment. We want to provoke questions about the natural and human worlds and knowledge about diverse places, people, resources, and environments. At Crestwood Park we do this through our 'study units' and question led approach.

Our curriculum gives children chances to learn from a range of geographical sources of information and in turn asks them to communicate what they have learnt in a variety of ways including writing at length.

Ultimately our themes and geography lessons allow our children to develop the skills that they need in order to do well in the next stage of their education, which in turn will give them the grounding needed for possible careers as geographers.

At Crestwood Park, we want all of our children to experience a broad and balanced curriculum. All children, including those with SEND, will experience the same learning opportunities and high expectations. Our geography gems (learning outcomes) are sometimes explored differently to enable children to succeed. Learning might be scaffolded and supported to help children achieve these outcomes. Scaffolded activities provide pupils with extra resources, such as visual prompts, to reach the same learning goals as the rest of the class. Resources might be presented in different ways to make the learning more accessible to some children.
