Monday

Compulsory

Log into Espresso (details at the top of this page). Go to Key Stage One -> English -> Scroll down to Love Reading with Espresso -> Select 'Fantastic Mr Fox' by Roald Dahl. We were reading this book at school before Christmas. Read the extract if you can, if you are finding it tricky or want to check what you read, click the speaker symbol and it will read it to you.

Use the descriptions in the book to draw and label a picture of Boggis, Bunce and Bean. If you can, write a sentence to explain why you have drawn what you have, using the text to help.

Log into Espresso (details at the top of this page) Go to Key Stage One -> English -> Scroll down to spellings. Select videos and watch the clip about compound words.

After watching this, select activities and scroll down to 'Compound Words: Connect the words'. Play this game.

Recommended

Log onto Espresso (details at the top of this page). Go to Key Stage One -> English -> Grammar & Punctuation -> Punctuation.

From here, watch the video about using capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks. Play the two activites after watching the video.

Tuesday

Click to enlarge the back cover and read the blurb. Have a go at writing your own blurb for Fantastic Mr Fox, thinking back to what we read at school and what happened in the story. What is the story about?

Use the sheets below to practise making compound words, as we looked at yesterday. The pictures sheet is most accessible, then the words and the challenge is the trickiest!

Recommended

Complete the sheets below to correctly punctuate sentences. They are varying in difficulty so choose what is right for you.

Wednesday

Below are some sheets to write a description of the different characters. There are sheets for Boggis, Bunce and Bean and you can use this extract to help you describe what they are like. If you want to challenge yourself further, I have included a sheet for Mr Fox, so you will need to think back to what we read at school to help you with this one. You can so all the characters or just one. On each sheet there are lots of adjectives in the corner to help you, but not all of them suit your character, so you'll need to choose carefully.

Go to https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/5/alt-spellings-ee and use the phoneme spotter to spot alternative spellings for 'ee'.

Thursday

Compulsory

Go to Oxford Owl https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/ and choose a reading book that is the same or a similar level to that which you are reading at school. You will need to use the free account you created last week to do this. Having read the book, design a new front cover for the it, thinking about the events in the book and the characters too.

Use spooky spellings to practise spelling some year 1 and 2 common exception words http://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/spookySpellings/index.html

You can choose either year 1 or 2 as both will be good practise. Choose book 2 this week.

Recommended

Write some questions, exclamation sentences and statement sentences about the picture below. Make sure you punctuate them correctly!

Friday

Compulsory

Here are three different texts for you to read and answer the questions. They are varying in levels of difficulty, 'Fish and Chips' is most accessible, 'How to Build a Snowman' is most challenging and 'Home Alone' is somewhere in the middle. You can have a go at all three or choose the one that is most appropriate to you. If you don't have a printer then you can read it on screen and answer the questions separately. Be aware that the answers are on the second page, so don't cheat!!

Go to https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/resources/phase/5/sentence-substitution-ph5a  and choose a sentence. Read the sentence and see how you can swap in the words at the bottom to create a new sentence that still makes sense. When you have done this you can choose a new sentence.
